Welcome to Volda

We bid you welcome to an area of colourful diversity and contrasts with the light, fjords and mountains – a meeting place for nature, culture and people.

Our region is unique. It extends from the edge of the ocean far into he deep blue fjords, to the majestic mountain peaks and the alpine rock formations of the Sunnmøre Alps. Here you’ll discover a fascinating landscape of fjord and mountain scenery with fertile valleys and bright reen slopes reaching up to the highest, wild mountain tops covered with glaciers. This is not just a picture, but reality, a landscape which you and I can wander in and become fond of. Majestic peaks and a rugged alpine ssif distinguish the Sunnmøre Alps from other mountain areas. The Sunnmøre Alps stretch from Nordfjord in the south to the Storfjord in the north. We invite you to enjoy exciting adventures and experiences, or just a well-deserved rest. Welcome to our region of Norway!

Volda and Ørsta in a key location

The two small rural towns of Volda and Ørsta are located in the centre of a large region, Søre Sunnmøre, and thereby act as a natural point of departure for trips to tourist attractions such as the bird island Runde, the art nouveau city of Ålesund, Geiranger with its World Heritage fjord, the most westerly point on the Norwegian mainland Vestkapp near Selje or Stryn and the Briksdal glacier.

New from february 2008: The Eiksund subsea road complex, with the world’s deepest underwater tunnel. This brand new addition to the local infrastructure will provide a ferry-free link between the mainland municipalities of Ørsta and Volda and the island municipalities of Sande, Herøy, Ulstein and Hareid. The deepest subsea tunnel in the world will then unite a region with 40 000 inhabitants, stretching from the skerries of the coast to the peaks of the Alps. At its deepest 287 metres below the seabed and 7.8 km long, the tunnel will be a unique experience in its own right.
